The Yorkshire Garden – 1st In Royal Chelsea Garden Show!

Well Yorkshire reigns supreme at the Royal Chelsea Flower Show in London. On a beautiful warm spring day The Yorkshire Garden looked stunning and was so well designed that you could be forgiven for thinking you were in stunning Yorkshire Dales.

In helping the Yorkshire Garden win the top spot, we were asked to supply some of our natural Yorkstone Flags and reclaimed natural weathered stone from our local quarry in Honley West Yorkshire.

For the event we supplied different types of natural and reclaimed stone from the event.

500 Years of Covent Garden, Chelsea Flower Show

Abacus Stone Sales supplied a range of reclaimed Yorkshire Stone to this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show. The stone supplied featured in a show garden called 500 Years of Covent Garden, created by JPH Landscapes based in Sheffield.

The garden’s design captured the history of Covent Garden and its inspiration came from the floral heritage of the area. Three different states of Yorkshire stone were used to capture some of the iconic sights of London’s historic and much loved Covent Garden, including reclaimed Yorkshire Stone Cobbles which were used to create a path leading to the centre of the garden.

The heart of the garden was a bespoke seating area that gave uninterrupted views of the garden. Behind the seating area were bright iron arches similar to the arches that feature in Covent Garden’s Market Building.

The garden was sponsored by the Sir Simon Milton Foundation, which wished to share the identity and culture of the famous London district with visitors.

Judges at the show awarded the garden a Silver Medal.

Abacus Stone supplied Yorkshire stone cobbles, reclaimed Yorkstone coping and Yorkshire stone cathedral grade flagstones, which were hand picked and featured throughout the show garden.

Welcome to Yorkshire Garden, Chelsea Flower Show

Abacus Stone Sales have been involved in supplying stone to RHS Chelsea Flower Show gardens since 2012 and continued in 2017 by providing materials for the Welcome to Yorkshire Show Garden, designed by Tracy Foster and created by Landform Consultants.

The garden was inspired by Yorkshire’s rugged beauty and features a mural by Yorkshire artist Julie Cope.

Wildflowers grow along a path leading to a simple wooden bench and ruined folly which provided the perfect place to sit and admire the view of the garden’s seaside scene.

Abacus Stone Sales supplied the reclaimed cathedral grade flagstones and the dry stone walling/backing stone which feature across the garden. The stonework seen in the garden was built and laid by Master Dry Stone Waller Richard Clegg.

The garden was sponsored by Welcome to Yorkshire with their aim being to highlight the beauty of Yorkshire and inspire people to visit the county. The Welcome to Yorkshire Show Garden won a Silver Medal.

Abacus Stone Sales supplies stone for Chelsea Flower Show garden

Abacus Stone Sales has supplied natural stone to a number of prestigious garden projects, including one for Veolia Water that won a Silver Medal at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show.

Abacus supplied dry stone walling and rockery stone for the garden

The water and wastewater management services company entered ‘Naturally Dry’ in the Artisan Garden category at the 2012 show and impressed the judges by demonstrating how it is possible to have a beautiful garden in times of drought.

Designed by Vicky Harris Garden Design and constructed by Sean Butler of Cube 1994, ‘Naturally Dry’ took elements of the Cumbrian countryside – a region where rain is plentiful – and reinterpreted them for the drier climate of south-east England.

Abacus supplied a range of natural stone, which was used to build dry stone walls, paths, rockeries and even a replica cottage that helped to create the feel of the Lake District scenery that inspired William Wordsworth.

The judges liked the overall look of ‘Naturally Dry’, along with the use of an old stone well head to capture rainwater and the choice of plants, which were all selected for their ability to flourish in dry conditions.

Yorkshire stone was a key feature of the medal-winning garden

Judges also felt many of the ideas in the garden were good examples of sustainability and that they were simple enough for people to recreate at home.

Designer Vicky Harris said: “To get a silver medal at the Chelsea Flower Show is a real honour. Sean and I have worked extremely hard on this drought resistant garden and we are absolutely ecstatic that the judges were impressed enough to give us this accolade.”
